Lünen / Rotterdam. AkzoNobel primarily produces chlorine and chlorine by-products such as sodium hydroxide solutions and hydrochloric acid at its Rotterdam-Botlek site. Other chemical companies are also located at AkzoNobel’s industrial park that purchase raw materials directly from AkzoNobel for their production activities, e.g. for vinyl chloride and herbicides, and feed their production wastewater into the wastewater treatment system. The result is complex wastewater that requires state-of-the-art technology if it is to be treated in the best possible way. To this purpose, REMONDIS Aqua developed a comprehensive concept to extend the performance of the existing two-stage treatment process (chemical-physical treatment phase and biological treatment). The wastewater is fully treated in the facility and discharged directly into the harbour water. This high-performance facility is needed to ensure the strict levels concerning the purity of the discharged water are reached. “REMONDIS’ concept is based on its RE-BALANCE concept which it has developed as a result of its experience of running numerous wastewater treatment facilities and which has already been used in many projects. This concept means wastewater can be accepted in a more flexible way and the high level of plant safety can be increased even further,” explains divisional plant manager Dr Martin Lebek.
Having successfully developed and implemented this optimization concept for the wastewater treatment facility at the Botlek industrial park in Rotterdam to fulfil AkzoNobel’s individual requirements, REMONDIS Aqua has been operating this facility to the full satisfaction of AkzoNobel.
As a result, the chemical company has now decided to extend the services provided by REMONDIS Aqua to include the operation of the groundwater treatment facility including the corresponding groundwater pumps and all monitoring activities connected to this work. “We believe that the fact we have now been allowed to integrate the groundwater treatment activities into our water management concept for the site reflects the level of satisfaction of our customer,” commented Dr Eckard Döpkens, project manager at REMONDIS Aqua.
